Proving Portable Accuracy — Ford Motor Company & Sensors, Inc.

Ford Motor Company, one of the world’s leading automotive manufacturers, collaborated with Sensors, Inc. to advance portable emissions testing and ensure that emerging regulatory and research needs could be met with scientifically rigorous tools.

Challenge

Regulators required accurate, real-world measurement of diesel vehicle emissions, including hydrocarbons, CO, NOx, and CO₂. Most early PEMS systems were designed for heavy-duty engines without aftertreatment and were not well suited for light-duty diesel cars equipped with oxidation catalysts. Ford needed a way to verify emissions performance under transient, real-world driving conditions.

Solution

Ford evaluated the Semtech Portable Emissions Measurement System (PEMS) from Sensors, Inc. in a chassis dynamometer facility. The system’s heated sampling line, flame ionization detector, and proprietary CO, CO₂, and NOx analyzers proved capable of precise, reliable measurement. Across 11 vehicle tests and more than 6,000 data points, SemtechD results consistently aligned with laboratory analyzers: THC within 4.5%, CO within 9%, NOx within 3%, and CO₂ within 2.6%. These findings demonstrated that portable technology could match the rigor of test cell instrumentation while enabling true real-world testing.
